It’s time for the monthly security check! According to the monitoring data from blockchain security audit company Beosin Alert, in June 2024, the total amount of losses from various security incidents decreased significantly compared to May. In June 2024, there were over 18 typical security incidents, resulting in a total loss of $183 million due to hacker attacks, phishing scams, and Rug Pulls, representing a decrease of approximately 60% from May. Among these events, the losses from attack incidents were around $141 million, a decrease of about 60%; phishing scam incidents accounted for approximately $37.4 million, a decrease of around 61.6%; and Rug Pull incidents totaled approximately $4.12 million, with an increase of about 102%.
This month saw several hacker attacks with losses exceeding tens of millions of dollars, involving various project types such as the UK exchange Lykke, DeFi lending platform UwU Lend, NFT protocol Holograph, Turkish exchange BtcTurk, and investment portfolio management company CoinStats. There were also two phishing scam incidents this month with losses exceeding tens of millions of dollars, indicating the need for users to remain vigilant.
Hacker Attacks:
A total of 9 typical security incidents occurred.
1. On June 2nd, DEX project Velocore was attacked on zkSync Era and Linea chains, resulting in approximately $6.8 million in losses.
2. On June 4th, the UK cryptocurrency exchange Lykke was hacked, leading to the theft of $22 million worth of cryptocurrencies.
3. On June 9th, the Ethereum Layer 2 protocol Loopring wallet was attacked, resulting in around $5 million in losses.
4. On June 10th, DeFi lending platform UwU Lend was attacked, with nearly $19.3 million worth of cryptocurrencies stolen. On June 13th, UwU Lend was attacked again by the same attacker, resulting in a theft of $3.72 million.
5. On June 10th, Blast ecosystem project YOLO Games was hacked for $1.5 million due to a smart contract vulnerability.
6. On June 14th, the entire-chain NFT protocol Holograph was attacked, with hackers illegally minting 1 billion HLG tokens, resulting in a total loss of around $14.4 million.
7. On June 22nd, the Turkish cryptocurrency exchange BtcTurk reported a hack, with losses exceeding $55 million.
8. On June 22nd, online betting platform Sportsbet was attacked by BTCTurk hackers, resulting in losses exceeding $3.5 million.
9. On June 22nd, cryptocurrency investment portfolio management company CoinStats suffered an attack due to server configuration errors, resulting in losses of approximately $10 million.
Phishing Scams/Rug Pulls:
A total of 5 typical security incidents occurred.
1. On June 1st, an address starting with 5G9Dpk was subject to a phishing attack, resulting in losses of around $11.2 million.
2. On June 5th, an address starting with 0xa38a was targeted in a phishing attack, leading to losses of about $2.12 million.
3. On June 8th, the Gemholic project on the ZKsync chain experienced a Rug Pull, resulting in losses of about $3.4 million.
4. On June 22nd, the GUNIT project on the Solana chain experienced a Rug Pull, with scammers profiting approximately $720,000.
5. On June 23rd, an address starting with 0xfb94 fell victim to a phishing attack, resulting in losses of around $11 million.
Cryptocurrency Crimes:
A total of 4 typical security incidents occurred.
1. On June 15th, the US charged two individuals operating the dark web market Empire Market, leading to the seizure of $75 million in cryptocurrencies and other assets by law enforcement.
2. On June 17th, former shareholders and executives of Huludao Bank were implicated in a virtual currency money laundering case involving 1.8 billion RMB.
3. On June 20th, the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against 24 individuals accused of money laundering. They reportedly facilitated the transfer of over $50 million in drug sales proceeds for the Sinaloa drug cartel through large cash transactions, purchasing cryptocurrencies, and cooperating with “Chinese underground banks.”
