Regarding performance improvements in Ethereum Layer 2 scaling, in my recollection, over the past few years, while it has been emphasized by various projects, many focused primarily on specific aspects or methods. For instance, projects in the OP realm emphasize enhancing Layer 2 scaling through “error proofs,” while those in the ZK realm focus on improving proof generation efficiency. Some have even implemented a degree of centralization (with sequencers being a typical example) to achieve high performance.

Following the launch of these projects, when it became evident that their performance improvements were considerably limited (falling short of initial expectations), these projects shifted their focus towards other areas, such as strengthening ecosystem development and supporting ecosystem projects.

Of course, I fully endorse these projects’ emphasis on ecosystem development and support.

However, MegaETH’s emergence suddenly made me feel that the pursuit of performance among these Layer 2 scaling solutions has gradually waned. From Ethereum’s perspective, it seems that scalability is increasingly equated with the sheer number of Layer 2 solutions: as their quantity grows, so does Ethereum’s transaction processing capacity over time—this does represent a form of performance enhancement, albeit somewhat strained and lacking in hardcore technical innovation.

MegaETH’s arrival has refocused attention on hardcore technological advancements in performance, a style that seems to have been absent in this ecosystem for quite some time. The detailed technical descriptions in MegaETH’s whitepaper feel more like a comprehensive review article on various elements critical to current blockchain performance scaling.

For the average reader, it may be feasible to overlook its technical details and instead explore and speculate on the project’s logic and planning.

In conclusion, after reading this whitepaper, readers should gain an understanding of how the project plans to leverage various means and perspectives to achieve its claimed 100,000 TPS for its Layer 2 scaling. Whether this goal can be achieved will ultimately depend on the actual products developed in the future.

In my view, the overall strategy employed by MegaETH involves categorizing nodes, segmenting various functionalities of Layer 2 scaling across different nodes. This allows each type of node to utilize hardware that meets its performance needs, thereby pushing the system’s performance to the limits of its hardware.

This approach reminds me of an earlier proposal by Vitalik concerning future node categorization in Ethereum. In that proposal, Vitalik envisions Ethereum’s future nodes being categorized: some nodes will require high-performance hardware for efficient transaction processing and block generation, requiring a stake of 32 ETH, while others serving merely as block validators can function on very basic hardware (even embedded devices), requiring minimal ETH staking. This approach not only meets Ethereum’s mainnet performance requirements but also maximizes network decentralization.

I wonder if MegaETH’s approach resonated with Vitalik, prompting his involvement in the project?

Of course, I have some questions about this project as well, such as whether it consistently uses a specified method for handling sequencers or employs a sampling approach among numerous candidates. This detail seems not to be explicitly addressed in the whitepaper. If it’s the former, how does the system prevent single-point failures?

In summary, MegaETH introduces a high-performance flagship project into the Ethereum Layer 2 scaling ecosystem, enriching the overall landscape and undoubtedly adding significant value to the ecosystem.

As for its investment value (if it launches its own token), my perspective is this: projects like MegaETH require substantial financial sponsorship for R&D, making them unlikely to avoid venture capital participation. Therefore, the value of such projects (if they issue tokens) will certainly consider the interests of venture capitalists.

Additionally, such projects belong to the heavyweight category: their value and significance are immediately apparent and clear.

Consequently, such projects generally have a capped ceiling for token appreciation potential.

Therefore, in my opinion, MegaETH’s significance for Ethereum, particularly in the context of Layer 2 scaling, far exceeds its investment value.
